Having decided to take this Clay Pigeon Shooting thing reasonably seriously I decided I had better gain some useful knowledge, and hence I booked myself on a CPSA Safety Officers course held at the Bisley Gun Club.
Not everyone will agree that this course is a neccesity, but I think that I disagree. Clearly, if you are a range officer, referee or coach it is vital that you can manage the proceedings in a safe manner. But, and here is the thing, Everyone concerned has their part to play in making it a fun and safe experience for all concerned. It does not matter if you have shot weekly for years, or if you shoot once a year it is incumbent on you to conduct yourself in a manner that is in tune with the potential worst case during an accident
The course itself covers a plethora of subjects. Law, including the Firearms act, but also health and safety, employment and so on. Checking a shotgun is legal and safe to fire, range practises to prevent explosions and major injuries. It was, a very comprehensive package that could only just be crammed into one day.
Would I have rather spent the day on the range at Bisley shoting at clays? Of course, but that doesnt negate the usefullness of all the information that I received. This will last for years and keep both me and others safe. It was a day well spent!
